Cat Mate Elite Selective Cat Door Review

Cat Mate Elite Selective Cat Door

I purchased this door after my cat and a neighbor's cat had a fight in the house while I was at work. I was worried the noise may be too much, based on research, but my 14 year old cat seemed to adapt to that fine. It does work. It makes a buzzing sound as the cat pushes through then buzzes once more as it locks right behind her. One important note: I am unable to comprehend why the internal wires going to the locking mechanism are uninsulated. There is no danger here, as the voltage is low, but when I first installed it two of the wires got pushed together. This caused the door to make a horrendous sound as the latch cycled several times each time the door was operated. I nearly sent the door back but then decided something must be wrong. I removed the door and noticed two of the three bare wires going to the locking mechanism had been accidently pressed together, probably on installation. It was an easy fix, but I bet a lot of people have done the same thing, then sent their door back - or just wished they had never bought it in the first place. If you make sure not to press the wires together on installation the door works good. I've had mine for about four months.

Cat Mate Electromagnetic Cat Door Review

Cat Mate Electromagnetic Cat Door

I've had this door for a little over 5 years now. It replaced a flap only door that was used with a sliding glass door insert (purchased at Home Depot, only had to slightly enlarge the hole to get it to fit) that was letting all the neighbors cats in too.
Overall it works as expected by keeping the neighbors cats out (one of them was quite hilarious, it laid on its side and was pounding on the door with its paws)... that is when its working correctly. First problem that arose after a while was the door wouldn't close all the way when my cat would come in, it would hit the latch and stop (its supposed to hit the latch and push it down) which would let the neighbors cats in again. I fixed that by using a small file to put a 45 deg angle on the door edge so it could pass over the latch easier, and also added some weights to the door.
It did keep the raccoons out, but only as long as they tried pushing the door to get in. They soon figured out they could put their claws underneath the door and pull it open (door only latches one way, the other way it freely opens). So if raccoons are a problem you'll need a different door that can latch both ways to keep them out. You could install 2 of these if you had the space, one for in, one for out, and set the 4 way switch so it can't open in the unlatched direction, but that'll be a trick to teach your cat which one to use when! I ended up having to move the door to another sliding glass door in the house.
The magnet does need to always point down to open the door, but I keep my cats collar fairly loose (can easily get 2 fingers in, and its an all elastic collar) so even if the collar spins around the weight of the magnet will rotate it so its facing down again when he is walking.
Battery life was a concern at first but hasn't been an issue at all, seems to last a very long time. I've never had one die but I still replace it every so often when I think about it.
I'm having to get spare parts now, the edge of the door broke where the latch is located so it effectively became a cat flap again. I was wondering why my cats food was disappearing so fast!
Overall I would recommend it if all you have it a flap only door now, but unless they have changed their design since I bought mine you will need to tweak it to get it to work right. And definitely don't expect it to keep raccoons out, at least not for long.
Update: Reliability of the electronic portion of this door is poor. The coil on it fails for some reason. The first coil lasted for years, but two of the replacement coils I installed since didn't even last a year. The company doesn't warranty replacement parts either. So now it leaves me wondering when it will leave my cat stranded outside again. I lowered my rating from 3 to 2 because of this.

PetSafe Staywell Magnetic 4-Way Locking Cat Flap, White Review

PetSafe Staywell Magnetic 4-Way Locking Cat Flap, White

(More customer reviews)
I want to preface my review by stating that I got this door for indoor use, and if you're looking for a door to go on the outside then there are better options out there than this one. But for use indoors, this one fits the bill just fine.
I have five cats, and one is on a diet. I previously had a cat bowl on a counter top that only four could reach, but when my fat cat learned to make the jump I had to come up with a different solution. I decided I needed to make a feeding box, and the four cats that could eat whenever they want would have magnetic collars that would allow them access but would keep the cat on a diet out.
The installation instructions recommend installing the door at a height between 4"-6". I measured my cats and installed it at a 5" on my temporary cardboard feeding box, but they were having trouble the first few days with getting the magnets on their collars to trigger the door because their magnets were still too high up. I raised the box up by 2" (to a 7" total height) and they now have a much easier time getting in. So try a test run to see just how much effort it takes for your cat to get the magnet to activate before you cut into an actual door. All four cats were able to adjust quickly after I fixed the height issues.

Ani Mate 254B Cat Mate Electromagnetic Cat Flap, Brown Review

I have had a few of these doors over the years and find them to be consistently reliable. Eventually I have to replace them from use and dirt. The raccoons can still get their paws under the flap and come into the house, so I have to lock it at night. I really want a door that keeps raccoons out and lets my cat come and go at night, so I don't have to let him out every morning at 4am and back in again at 5:30 am... Still working on that though. The smaller door is good for cats up to 20lbs.

Ideal Pet Products 5-by-7-Inch Small Original Pet Door with Telescoping Frame Review

Ideal Pet Products 5-by-7-Inch Small Original Pet Door with Telescoping Frame

We bought this for our two cats to use going in and out of the garage. Overall the quality is decent, and it does fit our cats. We put it into a metal door which made cutting the hole out MUCH harder, even using a dremmel. I would like this product to have a place to put the sliding piece that can be used to keep the cats from going in and out since we had to put a hook on the door to hold it but it looks tackier. The magnet is strong enough to close the flap quickly once the cats have gone through but both cats have now taken to using it easily. I do wish it had two flaps for an added amount of insulation between indoors and out, and that it looked better since it is very utilitarian. Overall it is functional and I would buy one again.
