(More customer reviews)Some of the negative reviews crack me up. Typical modern day attitude, blame everything on somebody else. Common sense will do much more than any instruction manual. Petsmart can't control the fact that an animal is an animal, which is why it is YOUR responsibility to properly train your animal, and not turn them loose till they are fully trained and under control. For the first couple days I took our cat past all the flags and scolded him if he tried to go near them (without the collar). I had to be very careful and keep a leash on him at first, because he would freak out and run blindly in any direction(including up my leg with sharp claws) when he got shocked. Only after he figured things out and knew that the beep would be followed by a shock, and promptly back away till the beep stopped, did I leave the collar on him without a leash.

(More customer reviews)This works soooo amazingly well, I cannot tell you how much we love it. We have two lab/retrievers who are BARKERS. Everything real or imagined, they loved to "talk" about it. Within a day our dog were quiet. They no longer barked at everything. If they do SEE someone in our yard (has happened three times) they DO still bark--which I love! The reason I have to give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that we had to buy replacement collars (not the device, but the nylon collar part) since our dogs are able to break the plastic locking clips. We used a plastic coated collar with a metal buckle and it works PERFECT! Our dogs are shaggy, so we have to make sure the device is firmly in place over their vocal cords (not on the back of their neck, etc) and we remove them when they are inside or crated so they don't get rub marks, etc (don't know if that would happen, just saying it could). I LOVE this product.

(More customer reviews)I also use this collar on my Maltese, and it seems to be helping her behavior. So far, so good. Its simple, and it works. At this price, you can't beat it.
IMPORTANT:
For a while it seemed to only work intermittently, and I couldnt figure out why. Now I realize that it ONLY WORKS IF THE COLLAR'S LED IS LIT. AND THE LED WILL ONLY LIGHT IF THE DOG IS ACTIVE. The collar has some kind of motion sensor and it powers down when the dog is motionless. I keep her crated, and I'd put the collar on when she left her crate. But it wouldnt work. So be sure to SHAKE IT to make the LED come on before putting it on your dog. When the collar's LED is lit, the unit works great.

It arrived just as described, but after about 3 or 4 weeks the glossy hot pink color fades really bad to a nasty dry light orange color. My dog is an indoor dog, so there is no reason why it should do that. The quality of the leather is great, the spikes were nice, but the color turns very bad in a very short amount of time.

One good thing about this collar is that it is not the typical woven collar that gets fuzzy because of the cat scratching itself. It is vinyl underneath the velveteen, so no more fuzzies. One draw back is it does not have a separate metal loop for the license, etc. to hang on.

I was told you can use it in conjunction with Frontline Plus, which I do, because sometimes I would still find a tick or two on my dogs. I use it only on my long haired dogs and it must be close to the skin according to the instructions. I don't want my other dogs to bite it while playing, so I have chosen not to use it on my short haired dogs. Will buy more!

(More customer reviews)I'm just got off the phone with SportDog customer service -- had to wait on hold 16 minutes before I got a human, listening to the same three recorded messages over and over -- and they tell me they will replace the unit but will not do a refund.
I want to return it because at this point I have no faith in the product and don't want to have to shock myself every time time I put it on my dog to make sure it's on a level he can feel. When I first got it 7 weeks aga, level 3 felt pretty painful (on my hand) but now level 3 is undetectable to me, and evidently to my dog as well, as he doesn't give any indication he feels anything.
I'm really sorry I didn't get the Dogtra 1900NCP, which has 14 rave reviews on Amazon. But I went with this one because it looked more ergonomic, and comes with a training DVD. The DVD is a joke, they tell you to shock your dog every time you give a command! IOW, you're punishing your dog before he's even had a chance to obey. That is nuts.
May 27, 2011 update: The unit failed entirely yesterday and Sportdog is sending me a full refund. I bought it in mid Feb and it lasted until late May -- 3 1/2 months. Not very impressive.
